Volleyball Smothers Auburn In Season Opener

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest volleyball team got the 2002 season underway Friday night with a 30-13, 30-20, 30-7 romp over Auburn. Playing host to the four-team Deacon Invitational at Reynolds Gym, Wake Forest was led by junior right side hitter Ashley Fisher who recorded 13 kills on 17 attempts.
Senior setter Ashlee Phillips tallied 39 assists on the day to go with six digs, while redshirt freshman left side hitter Valerie Rydberg lit up the Tigers with eight service aces.
As a team, the Demon Deacons hit 36.9 percent of their attempts, while holding Auburn to a dismal -02.6 percent.
In the first match of the tournament, Ohio outlasted a pesky Virginia Tech squad in four games, winning 30-19, 28-30, 30-24, 30-23. Laura Hageman and Jesica Jones paced the Bobcats with 15 and 14 kills respectively. Ana Lang led the Hokies in kills (13) and digs (20).
The Deacon Invitational will conclude tomorrow with Auburn versus Virginia Tech at 11:00 a.m., Wake Forest versus Ohio at 1:00 p.m., Ohio versus Auburn at 5:00 p.m. and Wake Forest versus Virginia Tech at 7:00 p.m.
