Field Hockey Shuts Out Michigan

The Wake Forest field hockey team defeated the defending national champions, the Michigan Wolverines, 2-0, on Sunday on the second day of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Wake??s win and Michigan??s loss leave each team with a record of 1-1 on the young season.
The Deacons stuck to their aggressive ways, outshooting the Wolverines, 18-10 and earning eight penalty corners to five for Michigan. In the 23rd minute of play, senior Maria Whitehead took a feed from beyond the circle from junior Kelly Doton and put it in the net to give the Deacons a 1-0 lead.
The second half was scoreless until the final minute when Deacon senior Heather Aughinbaugh scored off a deflection after a penalty corner attempt to give Wake Forest the 2-0 victory.
Deacon goalkeeper Katie Ridd made three saves in her first victory and shutout of the season.
Wake Forest will return to action on Thursday night when they take on the U.S. National Team at 7 p.m. under the lights at Kentner Stadium.
