The Wake Forest volleyball team travels to Lexington, Ky., this weekend to compete in the Kentucky Conference Challenge. The Demon Deacons (2-4) will face the host team, Kentucky (4-2) at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 13 and then take on Western Michigan (1-5) at 10:00 a.m. and Dayton (5-2) at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14.
The Deacs are looking to snap a three-match losing streak after their 0-3 showing at the BYU Mizuno Classic in Provo, Utah last weekend, in which Wake lost 3-1 to No. 3 USC, 3-2 to BYU and 3-1 to Oral Roberts. Despite going winless in the Beehive State, the Demon Deacons did put up a good fight in each match, taking one out of four games from USC and Oral Roberts and two out of five from the host team, BYU.
Sophomore middle blocker Kim Stern led the Demon Deacons last weekend at the BYU Mizuno Classic, putting away 40 kills to go with 12 blocks and four service aces over 12 games.
Senior setter Ashlee Phillips led the way with 138 assists over the three match tournament (10.62 per game) and scored on 20 of her 55 attacks. Phillips is fifth in the ACC with 10.96 assists per game and sixth with a .341 attack percentage.
Sophomore defensive specialist Tawni Schulte led the team with 47 digs (3.62 per game). She is third in the ACC with 3.46 digs per game.
Junior middle blocker Jessica Hauff led the team with 13 blocks and a .262 hitting percentage (25 kills, 9 errors, 61 total attacks) over the 13 games at BYU.
Outside hitters Ashley Fisher and Valerie Rydberg followed up opening weekend success with strong performances at the BYU Mizuno Classic. Fisher had 28 kills and 31 digs over the 13 games. Rydberg put away 35 kills to go with 31 digs over the 13 games. She leads the team with 2.88 kills per game and leads the ACC with 0.88 service aces a game.
Wake Forest and Kentucky have never met on the volleyball court. The Demon Deacons have never played Western Michigan either. Wake leads the series with Dayton 1-0.
