Phillips Becomes Wake Forest's All-Time Assists Leader

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Wake Forest volleyball team split a pair of matches Saturday at the Kentucky Conference Challenge beating Western Michigan 3-1 and losing 3-2 to Dayton. Redshirt freshman outside hitter Valerie Rydberg had a huge day for Wake, totaling 30 kills and 29 digs over nine games. Senior setter Ashlee Phillips becomes Wake Forest's all-time assists leader with her 107 assists today - giving her 3,795 career assists.
The Demon Deacons snapped a four-match losing streak with the 3-1 win over Western Michigan in the morning. The Broncos won the first game 30-28, but Wake Forest took the rest, winning the second game 30-28, outlasting Western Michigan 38-36 in game three and then sealing the victory with a 30-24 game four win. Rydberg put away 17 kills on 50 attempts to go with 15 digs.
Wake Forest took Dayton to five games, but came up short losing 3-2 in the final match of the tournament. The Demon Deacons won the first game 30-24, dropped the second game 30-28, took the third 30-28, but then lost the last two 30-23 and 15-11. Rydberg and freshman middle blocker Christy Williams led the way offensively with 13 kills each. Rydberg added 14 digs and Williams had eight blocks. Wake Forest shut down the Flyers, accumulating 16 total team blocks to Dayton's one.
Wake Forest stands 3-6 on the season and returns to action next weekend when the Demon Deacons return home to treat fans to another four-team tournament at Reynolds Gym. Wake will host UAB, Winthrop and San Diego State in the Black & Gold Challenge Sept. 20-21.
