#13 Women's Soccer Holds off USC, Remains Undefeated

The Wake Forest women??s soccer team remains undefeated as it beat Southern California 2-1. The match was the final game of the WFU adidas Invitational.

Katie Johnson put the Deacs on the board at the 25:29 mark of the first half on assists from Katherine Winstead and Sarah Kozey. The Women of Troy responded with a goal by Ali Fennell at the 37:14 mark. Alena Thom scored the game-winning goal for Wake Forest on a shot from A.B. Robbins with 53 seconds left in the first period. The goal was Thom??s fifth of the season.

Both defenses battled it out in the second half as no scoring took place. Wake Forest goalkeeper Erin Regan recorded two saves in the period, while Southern California??s Julia Peterson added two to her game total of five.

Wake Forest continues to outshoot its opponents, tallying 15 shots and holding the Women of Troy to four. Gabi Lieb and Melanie Schneider took three shots each for the game. Robbins, Thom and Winstead contributed two, while Alli Hunt, Katie Johnson and Sarah Kozey took one each.

??We came out and did exactly what we wanted to do. We executed everything perfectly today and all weekend,?? stated Coach da Luz. ??The girls were very focused and driven today just as they have been all season. Alena Thom had a great game. Joline Charlton was outstanding and Katie Johnson was big-time.??

The Demon Deacons will take on Maryland in their first conference match of the season on Friday, September 20. The game will take place in Spry Stadium at 7:00 pm.
