Field Hockey Flattens Highlanders

Winston-Salem, N.C. - After a 40-minute weather delay, the Wake Forest field hockey team defeated Radford tonight, 7-0, at Kentner Stadium. With the win, the Deacons run their record to 4-2 (0-0 ACC), while the Highlanders fall to 2-4 (1-1 NorPac). Dating back to a loss to North Carolina on October 14, 2000, the Deacons have now won 16 straight home games.
The Deacons wasted no time establishing control, as reigning ACC Player of the Week Kelly Dostal scored off a penalty corner from senior Maria Whitehead in the first minute of play. Fifteen minutes later, Dostal fed senior Heather Aughinbaugh who found the open net to make the score 2-0. Junior Emily Ruth scored back-to-back goals to close the first half, with assists from Aughinbaugh and junior Kelly Doton as the Deacs went into halftime leading, 4-0.
Doton chalked up another assist early in the second half, as she found junior Katie Ackerman for the tally. Doton then finished things off herself, scoring two unassisted goals late in the game to seal the 7-0 victory.
Starting goalkeeper Katie Ridd did not face a single shot. Sophomore Merrilee Robbins, who played the second half, was forced to make just one save, while Radford goalie Tina Caiazza made seven.
The Deacons outshot the Highlanders, 27-1 and won the penalty corner battle, 13-3.

The Deacons will be back in action on Saturday as they begin ACC play, welcoming the number-one ranked Maryland Terrapins to Kentner Stadium. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
