Brendon, Murray, Murphy, Ross and Simpson Advance at Virginia Invitational

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Wake Forest men's tennis team began competition Friday at the Virginia Invitational at the Snyder Tennis Center. Nine Demon Deacons were in action, playing both singles and doubles in the 128-person tournament. Trent Brendon, Mike Murray, Brian Murphy, Brett Ross and Andrew Simpson all won two singles matches to advance to the quarterfinals of their respective flights and the Demon Deacons went undefeated in doubles play.
Brendon, a senior from Victorville, Calif., defeated Jeff French from Louisville 6-3, 6-2 in the first round of the second singles flight and then bounced Kyle Bailey from American 6-3, 6-0 in the second round. He will face Virginia's Darrin Cohen in the quarterfinals tomorrow.
Murray, a senior from St. Petersburg, Fla., beat Cesar Vargas from Nebraska 6-3, 6-3 in the first round of the second singles flight and then came from behind to top Victor Koczan from Charleston Southern 3-6, 6-0, 6-2. He will take on Alabama's Michael Ray Pallares in the quarterfinals tomorrow.
Murphy, a junior from Thomasville, N.C., outlasted Tres Jones from Iowa 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 in the first round of the third singles flight and then stopped Brain Friedman from Alabama 6-4, 7-6 in the second round. He will play Nebraska's Patrick Kennedy in the quarterfinals tomorrow.
Ross, a freshman from Roswell, Ga., handed Adel Abbas from Virginia Tech a 6-4, 6-4 setback in the first round of the third singles flight and then toppled Kenan Bell of Liberty 6-1, 6-4 in the second round. He will square off against Old Dominion's Salman Mohammad in the quarterfinals tomorrow.
Simpson, a junior from Raleigh, N.C., got a first round bye in the third singles flight and then upended Mike Downing from Virginia 6-2, 6-2 in the second round. He will face Liberty's Ernesto Malagrino in the quarterfinals tomorrow.
David Bere got past Zoltan Csanadi from Old Dominion 7-5, 3-6, 6-1 in the first round of the top singles flight but then lost 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 to Maxim Belski from Alabama.
David Loewenthal stumbled in the first round of the top singles flight, losing 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 to Olivier Zimmerman from Charleston Southern. He fought off Justin Gaard from Iowa 6-3, 3-6, 10-3 in the opening consolation round to advance to the consolation quarterfinals, where he'll meet American's Tushar Garg tomorrow.
Mirko Ivanda dropped his first round match of the second singles flight 7-6, 6-3 to Jose Rivera from Nebraska, but then bounced back to Soufiane Rechag from Charleston Southern 1-6, 6-4, 10-8 in the opening consolation round. He will take on Liberty's Luiz Rino in the consolation quarterfinals tomorrow.
Derrick Spice suffered a 6-1, 6-4 loss in the first round of the top singles flight to Chris Gostek from Alabama and then fell 6-1, 6-4 in the opening consolation round to Santiago Falla from Charleston Southern.
In doubles action Loewenthal and Brendon beat Tushar Garg and Andrewas Kulcsar from American 9-8 in the opening round of the first flight. They face Stephen Mitchell and Geoff Hiscx from Alabama tomorrow in the quarterfinals. Ross and Spice teamed up to hand Alex Navinkov and Ramez Qamer of Rice a 8-4 loss in the first round of the top doubles flight. They will take on Alabama's Wiliam Boyles and Max Belski in the quarterfinals tomorrow. Murray and Bere easily won their first round matchup in the second doubles flight, taking out Jeff French and Mark Kennedy from Louisville 8-1. They square off against Alabama's Chris Gostek and Brad Friedman in the quarterfinals tomorrow.
Simpson and Murphy received a first round bye in the third doubles flight. They will play a mixed team of Michael Ray Pallares from Alabama and Mark Montandon from Virginia tomorrow in the quarterfinals. Ivanda is partnered with Virginia Tech's Adel Abbas and they also got a first round bye in the third doubles flight. They will battle Iowa's Matis Jasicek and Chaitu Malempati tomorrow in the quarterfinals.
