WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest volleyball team defeated Winthrop 3-0 Saturday afternoon in the Black & Gold Challenge that the Demon Deacons are hosting in Reynolds Gym. Wake Forest posted scores of 30-20, 30-16 and 30-16 to sweep the Eagles in three straight games. Holding Winthrop to 25 kills, the Demon Deacons had eight blocks to go with 43 kills.
Redshirt freshman outside hitter Valerie Rydberg led Wake Forest with nine kills and 12 digs. Senior setter Ashlee Phillips had 18 assists in the first two games and freshman setter Erin Borhart picked up 12 in game three. Junior middle blocker Jessica Hauff had four blocks for the Deacs. Sophomore middle blocker Morgan Havig saw her first action of the season and had three kills plus a block assist.
Jennifer Pritchard led Winthrop with seven kills. Logan Pierce had eight digs and Christie Davis posted 19 assists.
In the first game of the morning, San Diego State made quick work of UAB, winning 30-20, 30-23, 30-18 in three games taking 70 minutes. Melissa Cansdale led the Aztecs with 12 kills and Aspen McPartland had 13 digs. Kristi Lee led UAB with 10 kills.
Wake Forest improves to 5-6 with the win and Winthrop falls to 8-5 with the loss. San Diego State stands 8-6 and UAB is now 3-10. The Black & Gold Challenge continues this evening with two more matches. Winthrop and UAB will square off at 5:00 p.m. and then Wake Forest will face San Diego State in the tournament's final match at 7:00 p.m.
