Volleyball Drops Hard Fought Match To BYU

PROVO, Utah - The Wake Forest volleyball team dropped a hard fought five-game match to Brigham Young, 3-2 Friday night at BYU's Mizuno Classic in Smith Fieldhouse. The Demon Deacons jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a 30-24 win, but fell short in game two falling 31-29. Wake Forest took game three, winning 30-19 over the tournament's host. BYU, ranked 23rd last week and receiving votes in this week's poll, fought back and won game four 30-27, setting up a fifth game, which the Cougars won 15-10.
Sophomore middle blocker Kim Stern led Wake Forest with 14 kills to go with five blocks and three service aces. Outside hitters Valerie Rydberg and Ashley Fisher added 13 kills each. Senior setter Ashlee Phillips tallied 50 assists and sophomore libero Tawni Schulte racked up 26 digs.
Apirl Varner led BYU with 16 kills and 17 digs. The Cougars had 17.5 blocks on the night.
Wake Forest falls to 2-3 with the loss and BYU improves to 2-4 with the win. Wake concludes action at the BYU Mizuno Classic tomorrow with a 7:00 pm (5:00 pm MDT) match against Oral Roberts.
