Winston-Salem, NC - #16 Wake Forest women??s soccer won their fourth game of the season as they defeated Georgia 3-1 in the home opener at Spry Stadium. The win over the Bulldogs gives the Demon Deacons a perfect record of 4-0.
The first half was all Wake Forest as they outshot the Bulldogs 13-1. Junior Katherine Winstead scored the only two goals of the half, the first within the first nine minutes of play and the second at the 40:33 mark. Assisting Winstead on the first goal were Alena Thom and Alli Hunt, with Thom helping again on Winstead??s second attempt.
The Bulldogs tried to come back in the second half with Ashley King scoring a goal from Geneil Newborn, but the Deacs proved to be too much. Sara Creighton scored the game-winning goal on another assist from Thom with 50:51 left to put Wake up 3-1.
For the game, Wake Forest tallied 22 shots including 13 shots on goal to Georgia??s 10 shots and six shots on goal. Deacon goalie Erin Regan recorded five saves for the game in 90 minutes of action.
??We definitely had a lot of nerves for our home opener. The kids were attentive from the start, but I think they tried too hard,?? stated Coach da Luz. ??We didn??t perform well overall, but I guess it??s a good sign that we can still win if we don??t play at the level we are capable of.??
The Demon Deacons remain at home on Tuesday as they face the Wildcats of Davidson at 8:00.
