Wake Forest Postgame Quotes January 15, 2003 vs. Maryland

Maryland Head Coach Gary Williams... "I have to give Wake credit. They lost a great player in Gray and I never like to play a team when that happens. They tend to play a little harder, and they did that tonight. They pulled it together and just played better than we did in the first half. It's difficult to come back from that far down against a good team and Wake is a good team. It's a different team for us this year, but we just need to work a little harder on offense."

"We knew they were a great offensive rebounding team, but I think we could do better than we did on the glass. If we're going to do anything in this league, we have to respond on the road the same way we do at home."

"We'd seen their triangle-and-two defense and we practiced against it this week. But we didn't run our offense as hard as we should have. We prepared for it, but we need to work a little harder on offense."

Wake Forest Skip Prosser... "We are a young team and we're glad we were able to get up after the loss to Duke on Sunday. I give Maryland credit because they were national champs. I was proud of our guys -- they were able to get this win."

"Our guys have a lot of pride. They were stunned after our performance at Maryland last year. We knew we had to come out with a lot of energy tonight."

"We had a potpurri of defenses. We could not guard them. Fortunately, we were able to slow them down at times. We knew they would figure out our plan but hoped we would have a large enough lead that it wouldn't matter."

"I didn't know if we would win tonight. I was more concerned with how we would respond. Everything is a learning process. We are trying to be good now. People always say that we will be good in a couple years. But Josh Howard and Steve Lepore... they don't have a couple years. We want to be good now."

"We learned from last season every game is a war. You can't get down after a loss. You have another game, another war, and you have to look past the loss and move on.

Deacon senior Josh Howard... "It was a big win tonight. We played hard tonight, especially for Justin. To win at home against an ACC opponent is big. I remember last year when we played them at home and they beat us big. I didn't want to lose again."

"We continued to execute and we continued to play hard. Duke ran over us and we didn't want the same thing to happen tonight."

"Tonight was a must-win. Playing at home in the ACC is always big. The coaches and team pride ourselves on rebounding, and we outrebounded our opponent again tonight. The three big guys (Williams, Danelius, Ellis) established themselves down low and that allowed us to open up the perimeter."

"With Justin Gray not playing, I wanted to play for him and also my teammates. We lost big last year, and we didn't want to do it again. We played hard and it paid off."
