Wake Forest vs.Florida State Post-Game Quotes January 26, 2003
Wake Forest Head Coach Skip Prosser
"It was a hard-fought game obviously but I don't think we'll be sending a tape of it to Springfield (Massachusetts, home of the Basketball Hall of Fame). I thought we guarded as well as we could at the beginning and when we didn't guard them, that's when we gave up scoring opportunities.
We were fortunate enough to make some big shots and grab some big rebounds down the stretch and survive. That's the thing about this league - there are no lay-ups in this league.
On Josh Howard
"It wasn't vintage Josh but he's played so well for us in so many big games that I think he's entitled to maybe one less than spectacular performance.
On putting the game out of reach
"The game was hanging in the precipice and was there to be taken by the throat. Guys either make plays or they don't. Josh (Howard) hit a big three and we made some plays and were able to survive.
On Vytas Danelius
"Vytas really played well offensively. He, Taron (Downey) and Josh (Howard) really have to play well for us all the time. They have to score for us. Yes, Jamaal Levy has to be tough on the defensive end but those three kids have to step up and score points."
On the rash of turnovers in the second half:
"At times, the only true, true guard out there is Taron (Downey) and he's out there with big guys and small forwards who maybe aren't as adept at handling the ball. I think those turnovers are a product of having a lot of guys who maybe aren't as good at getting a shot for someone else."
Wake Forest sophomore guard Taron Downey
"Today in the second half we played better. Having fun out there is what it's all about. We knew we had to get it going or we were going to lose. We can't have two straight losses in this league."
"Josh Howard started off slow today, but down the stretch he strapped it on and turned into Superman for us out there. We really got it going when Josh hit the big three towards the end of the game."
"We have to win games at home. Winning on the road in the ACC is very important too, but winning at home is a must."
Florida State Head Coach Leonard Hamilton:
"I thought Wake Forest did a good job at the beginning on defensive pressure. Once we settled down we started to execute better but they continued to play defense. Their ability to draw fouls and our inability hurt us. They did a good job on the offensive boards and that lead to easy shots around the basket. We got beat by a team that was better than us at this point. We gave good effort. They created good looks down the court."
"You have to make baskets. We got good looks and good opportunities but we had several opportunities that we didn't finish."
"I have to give them credit. As opposed to what we didn't do, they deserved credit."
"I deserved the technical. I think the technical was warented. I complained because the referee warned a player but the next time down the court he didn't call it. I have no complaints about the officiating, we just need to learn to draw more fouls."
On Josh Howard:
"He is a great player, but you can't hold a good player the entire game. He is destined for greatness. I thought we did a good job defending him and thank goodness he didn't get more shots off."
