Winston-Salem, N.C. - Wake Forest substitute Meagan Mullins' first goal of the season proved to be enough as the Demon Deacons slipped past East Carolina, 1-0, in women's college soccer action from Spry Stadium Wednesday evening. The victory was the eighth consecutive for Wake Forest.
Mullins, who made just her third appearance of the season, entered the game at the 32:20 mark of the first-half and immediately put herself into a goal scoring position. On a Wake Forest corner kick from Elizabeth Remy, Mullins gained possession deep in the Pirates' six-yard box and slipped the ball under ECU goalkeeper Lindsi Troxler at 33:36.
The goal was not only Mullins' first of the season, but it was her her first tally since October 20 of last season.
Demon Deacon goalkeeper Kenna Healy and the rest of the Wake Forest defense would make the goal stand. Healy faced just five shots on the evening, picking up one save, en route to her sixth shutout of the season. With the shutout, Healy moved into fifth place all-time with 8.5 career shutouts. The junior netminder also moved into third place for shutouts in a single-season.
East Carolina did create a pair of scoring chances in the game's final minutes, but Melanie Schneider and Alli Hunt cleared both chances out of the penalty area.
Wake Forest nearly grabbed a two-goal cushion midway through the second-half. Freshman substitute Lindsey Jaco blasted a shot from the top of the penalty box, beating Troxler, but the ball bounced off the cross bar.
The Demon Deacons outshot the Pirates, 8-5, and held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Wake Forest now turns its attention to ACC play. The Demon Deacons open conference action Saturday night at Duke. Kickoff with the Blue Devils is scheduled for 7 p.m. Wake Forest will not only look to extend its current winning streak to nine games, but also snap their four-match losing streak against Duke.
