WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.-- The Wake Forest volleyball team had a strong showing Friday night against fifth-ranked Georgia Tech, but the Yellow Jackets were too much to handle and took a 3-0 victory. An enthusiastic crowd of 575 came out to Reynolds Gymnasium to watch the top two teams in the ACC compete against each other. Georgia Tech improves to 5-0 in the ACC and 17-0 overall while the Demon Deacons go to 3-2 and 13-4.

Valerie Rydberg led the Deacs with 14 kills and added 11 digs in the losing effort. Jessica Hauff hit a team-high .316 and Christy Williams contributed with seven kills and two solo blocks. Katy de Roeck recorded five kils and six digs while Kim Stern put away eight kills for Wake Forest. Georgia Tech hit .359 as a team over the course of the match and had four players with at least ten kills.

"We were definitely prepared and ready to go," said head coach Valorie Baker. "We came out and executed our gameplan. We were trying to take Lauren Sauer out of the match, which enabled us to score and I thought the girls executed that in the first game. In the second game, we struggled and got behind a little bit. In the third game we came back and played with much more confidence. I was really pleased with the level of play, I don't feel like we let down. We kept going after them and felt we could win. It just didn't come out our way this time."

Georgia Tech earned a hard-fought 33-31 victory in game one. Both teams battled hard back and forth, but in the end, the fifth-ranked Yellow Jackets came out on top. Game two saw Georgia Tech make just three errors while hitting .439. The Deacs struggled a bit, commiting seven errors in the game as Tech won 30-21 and took a two games to none advantage. The third and final game was another seesaw battle which went down to the wire before the Yellow Jackets found themselves on top by a 30-27 score. Wake Forest hit .262 in the game, but Georgia Tech responded with 21 kills and a .326 percentage.

The Demon Deacons return to action Saturday night when they host the Clemson Tigers in Reynolds Gymnasium at 6 p.m.
