Last Time Out
CHARLOTTE, N.C. --- Wake Forest senior Lindsey Griffin scored her first two goals of the season, while freshman Elizabeth Remy added a goal and two assists to lead the Demon Deacons past Charlotte, 4-1, in women's college soccer action Tuesday night.
The two goals were the first for Griffin since the 2000 season. The forward missed all of 2002 and much of the 2001 campaign battling separate knee injuries.
Sophomore Melanie Schneider gave the Deacs a 1-0 lead midway through the first half. Schneider stripped a 49er defender of the ball and went one-on-one with Charlotte goalkeeper Lauren Dansby. The Peachtree City, Ga. native beat Dansby at 22:52 for her second goal of the season.
Griffin, a native of Englewood, Colo., struck next for Wake Forest. Griffin buried a volley into the back of the net at 27:29. Remy picked up the assist after her beautiful cross found Griffin inside the penalty box.
After Remy pushed the lead to 3-0 at 64:14, Griffin capped off her wonderful night with a goal at 66:48. Again, Remy recorded the assist.
Charlotte did manage a meaningless goal late in the second half preventing Wake Forest and goalkeeper Kenna Healy of their eighth shutout of the season. Nonetheless, Healy picked up a pair of saves and has not allowed more than one goal in a single game since the 3-0 defeat against #2 Notre Dame on Aug. 29.
With the victory, the Demon Deacons improve to 9-2-1 overall, while the 49ers drop to 1-10-1. Wake Forest also ups its record against Charlotte to 8-0-1 with their seventh consecutive victory in the all-time series.
Scouting The Cavaliers
Virginia enters the game as one of the hottest teams in the entire country - climbing as high as #3 in any national poll. The Cavaliers have won eight consecutive matches - the third longest active streak in the nation - including conference victories over NC State, 7-0, and Florida State, 3-2. Virginia has gotten off to the great part due to its stingy defense and offensive trio of Kelly Hammond, Kelly Gusick and Ariel Thompson. The Cavaliers have allowed just seven goals in their 12 games - good for a 0.57 goals against average. Anne Abernathy has logged nearly every minute in the nets for the Cavaliers. Abernathy has recorded three shutouts. Meanwhile, Hammond, Gusick and Thompson have scored 19 of their 27 goals. The trio has also registered 11 assists. Hammond leads the team in points (22) with nine goals and four assists. Virginia has already defeated highly regarded foes #8 West Virginia and #13 Santa Clara.
Last Meeting
Winston-Salem, N.C. --- The Virginia women's soccer team used two goals from senior Darci Borski to upset No. 14 Wake Forest 2-1 Saturday night at Spry Stadium. It was the Cavaliers' first win over a ranked opponent this season and inproves their record to 9-5-2 on the year and 2-3 in the ACC.
The first half had few scoring chances at either end during the first 25 minutes of play. However Borski took advantage of Virginia's first shot in the 26th minute as Lindsay Gusick sent a cross that was deflected to Borski who one-timed it into the net. The Demon Deacons would quickly counter and tied the game less than three minutes later as Katie Johnson headed a ball into the net off passes from Joline Charlton and Melanie Schneider. The first half had few opportunities the rest of the way and the teams went to halftime tied at 1-1.
The Cavaliers started attacking strong in the second half and in the 53rd minute Borski scored her second of the night on a through ball from Sarah Lane. The Cavalier defense would stand strong the remainder of the game and held on for the 2-1 win.
Virginia outshot the Demon Deacons 9-8 in the game. Anne Abernethy made four saves for Virginia while Erin Regan made five for Wake Forest.
