Winston-Salem, NC - The #1 Wake Forest field hockey team fell to #4 Duke Sunday at Kentner Stadium, 1-0. This is the first loss for the Deacons, who fall to 12-1, 3-0 for the season. Duke ends the Deacs 31 game winning streak and advances to 11-2 overall, 1-2 in the ACC.

Senior back Lucy Shaw had a goal-saving dive with 7:40 left in the first half, as the Deacs headed into the break, tied 0-0.

The Blue Devils scored in second half action with just 18:34 left on the clock. Duke's Katie Grant scored the goal, her 11th of the season.

"They put a lot more pressure on us than previous opponents this season," said Head Coach Jennifer Averill. "We made poor decisions with the ball. Statistically we beat them, but we just couldn't finish on our shots".

The Deacs took 14 penalty corners to Duke's 7, and 21 shots to the Blue Devil's 9. Green cards were issued to Duke's Chrissie Murphy and Gracie Sorbello.

"They just played with more heart. We need to rebound from this loss and play harder next time," said Averill.

The Deacs travel to Chapel Hill Sunday, October 19 to face the second ranked North Carolina Tarheels. The game is set to begin at 1:00 pm.
