CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Lindsay Tarpley scored four goals to lead top-ranked North Carolina past 12th-ranked Wake Forest, 6-0, in ACC women's soccer action from Fetzer Field Tuesday night.
The Tar Heels jumped out to an early 1-0 lead just 3:03 into the match. Tarpley got on the end of an Alyssa Ramsey cross and one-timed it over a charging Demon Deacon goalkeeper Kenna Healy.
North Carolina continued the assault on the Wake Forest net. The Tar Heels pushed the lead to 2-0 on a goal from Anne Morrell at 33:09. Maggie Tomecka was credited with the assist.
North Carolina would add a goal just seconds from halftime. Catherine Redick, making her first appearance since her return from duty with the U.S. Women's National Team, found some space at the top of the Demon Deacon box and blasted a goal past a sprawling Healy.
North Carolina would add three second half goals, all from Tarpley. Tarpley now has an ACC leading 18 goals on the season.
Healy faced a season-high 27 shots on the evening and recorded six saves. Prior to Tuesday night, the junior had not allowed more than one goal since the August 30, 3-0, defeat to #2 Notre Dame.
Wake Forest created a number of solid scoring chances in the second half, but was unable to crack the solid Tar Heel defense. North Carolina has now recorded 12 shutouts in their 15 victories.
With the victory, the Tar Heels improve to 15-0-0, 4-0-0 in the ACC, while Wake Forest falls to 9-3-2, 0-2-1 in the league.
The Demon Deacons will return to action this weekend with another huge ACC match against Florida State. Kickoff at Spry Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m. Wake Forest leads the all-time series with FSU, 7-0-1, and has captured the last two meetings.
