Winston-Salem, NC - The 10th-ranked Wake Forest men's soccer team extended its regular season home unbeaten streak to 23 games with a 2-0 victory over NC State at Spry Stadium on Saturday night.
The Deacons controlled possession all night and generated wave after wave of scoring chances, out-shooting the Wolfpack 28-8 for the game.
With about three minutes to go before halftime, Jeremiah White charged into the penalty area on a breakaway. NC State goalkeeper Jorge Gonzalez left his line and attempted a sliding tackle on White. His challenge came too late and White was hauled down.
The Deacons were awarded a penalty kick and White put the ball in the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.
It was White's first goal since August 30 against St. John's. The senior All-American and Hermann Trophy finalist had missed two weeks with a broken cheekbone. Still fractured, White wore a protective headband.
The second half provided countless scoring opportunities. Ryan Caugherty clanged a blast off the inside of the right post in the 68th minute. Later, Caugherty was robbed from point blank range by the Wolfpack goalkeeper.
Ryan Alexander had some golden opportunities but his five shots were off target, leaving the door cracked for NC State.
But Vicente Bastidas slammed the door on the Wolfpack in the 77th minute. Justin Moose brought the ball up the right wing and centered a pass to the top of the penalty area. White let the ball through to an on-rushing Bastidas. He chipped the ball over the keeper's head for a 2-0 lead, the final score of the game.
NC State was forced to play with ten men after defender John Queeley was sent off in the game's 16th minute. He took down Wake Forest's Steven Curfman three times in a 45 second span. The third tackle was from behind, causing Curfman to tumble face first in the Spry Stadium turf. Queeley was sent off and Curfman did not return.
Senior All-American goalkeeper William Hesmer didn't see much action during the game. He needed to make two stops to earn his third shutout of the season.
Wake Forest won its 11th straight contest over NC State. In four all-time meetings at Spry Stadium, the Deacons have outscored the Wolfpack 13-1.
The game was played in front of an overflow crowd of 3,586, the second largest regular season crowd in Spry Stadium history.
Wake Forest improved to 5-3 overall and 1-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. NC State slipped to 6-5 on the year and 2-2 league play.
The Deacons will return to action on Tuesday, October 7 at Spry Stadium against the High Point Panthers. The match is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
