Winston-Salem, NC - The seventh-ranked Wake Forest men's soccer team spotted High Point an early goal but responded with five straight of their own to come away with a 5-1 victory on Tuesday night at Spry Stadium. The victory extended Wake Forest's regular season home unbeaten streak to 24 games. The Deacons improved to 6-3 while High Point fell to 2-9-1.
High Point scored first in the fifth minute. Panther freshman Chris Archer lofted a 35-yard shot over the top of Deacon goalkeeper Brad McEachern.
Less than five minutes later, Steven Curfman and Jeremiah White linked up to Scott Sealy who tallied the equalizer. Curfman found White at the corner of the penalty area. White crossed to the far post where Sealy re-directed the ball into the net.
With 15 minutes remaining in the first half, Sealy struck again. This time, it was a header by the junior from Trinidad on a cross from Curfman. Justin Moose was credited with his third assist of the season, tied for the team lead with Curfman.
The High Point goal served as a wake up call for the Deacons who responded with 17 unanswered shots before halftime.
In the second half, Tomy Szczypiorski notched his third goal of the year. Wells Thompson saved a ball along the far touchline. He controlled and passed ahead to Szczypiorski in the penalty area. Szczypiorski danced around the keeper and put the ball into an open net for a 3-1 lead.
Moments later, the Deacons added to their lead on a goal by Kelvin Jones. Justin Moose crossed the ball into a crowded penalty area. The ball was right on the foot of Mark Ellington. High Point goalkeeper Matt Long stopped the initial shot by Ellington but Jones was there to clean up the mess.
Wake Forest put the finishing touches on the victory with an unassisted goal in the 85th minute by Ryan Alexander. It was Alexander's second goal of the season and he fought through a maze of Panther defenders before beating the goalkeeper.
The first half goal allowed by McEachern, a fifth year senior, broke a personal goal-free streak that stopped at 282 minutes and dated back to 1999. The Deacons will return to action on Sunday, October 12 at South Carolina. Kickoff in Columbia is set for 2:00 p.m.
