Cary, NC - The second-ranked and second-seeded men's soccer team prevailed 3-1 in a tightly-contested ACC Tournament quarterfinal match against Duke on Wednesday night in Cary, N.C.
Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year Jeremiah White scored the game-winning goal with 1:44 to play following a corner kick. Adam Hakes added an insurance goal with an assists to White on a 3-on-1 breakaway with 18 seconds left.
The Demon Deacons rallied from a 1-0 deficit. Duke scored first in the 33rd minute on a goal by Blake Camp.
But Wake Forest responded less than three minutes later on a build-up instigated by White. His through ball found Wells Thompson who was one-on-one with Duke's keeper. Thompson left the ball for fellow ACC All-Freshman teammate Steven Curfman who scored at the 35:32 mark. It was Curfman's third goal of the season.
The score remained knotted at one until the 89th minute on White's game-winner.
Fifth-year senior Brad McEachern finished with five saves in goal in his first ever ACC Tournament appearance.
White's one goal and two assists pushed him past Ben Stafford into second place on the all-time Wake Forest scoring chart. White has 37 goals and 19 assists for 93 career points.
The Deacons advance to Friday's semifinal at 8:00 p.m. to face either third-seeded Virginia or sixth-seeded Clemson. In the regular season, Wake Forest defeated Clemson 3-2 on October 19. Virginia upended the Deacons 2-1 on September 13 in Charlottesville, the game when White suffered a broken cheekbone.
With Wedneday's win, Wake Forest sets a new school record with 11 consecutive victories. The Deacons are now 15-3 overall and tie a program record for wins.
Wake Forest qualifies for the ACC semifinals for the fifth straight year and will be looking to advance to the tournament finals for the first time since 1991.
