WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest men's golf team has inked three highly-touted golfers for the 2004-05 season, as announced by head coach Jerry Haas on Tuesday. Dustin Groves of Keswick, Va., Chris McCartin of Arlington, Va. and Webb Simpson of Raleigh, N.C. have all signed national letters-of-intent to play for the Deacs next fall. Groves and McCartin are two of the top-ranked players in the state of Virginia, while Simpson ranks among the top 10 juniors in the nation.

"We are very excited about signing the top two players out of Virginia as well as one of the highest-ranked golfers in the country in Simpson," said Haas. "With the addition of these three players, the future looks very bright for WFU golf. I expect them to play early next year and to make an immediate impact. Not only are they great golfers, but they are quality young men who will enhance the Demon Deacon golf program."

Groves, who attends Monticello High School in Charlottesville, is the reigning Virginia State Junior Match Play Champion. He succeeded McCartin, who captured the title in 2002. Groves was the 2002 District and Regional champion as well as a qualifier for the U.S. Junior Amateur in 2003.

McCartin attends Yorktown High School and is a three-time Northern Virginia Regional Champion (2001, '02, '03). He was a qualifer for the U.S. Junior Amateur in addition to his State Junior Match Play title in 2002. Groves and McCartin have previous experience as teammates, as both have been on the Virginia Junior Match Play team the last two years.

Simpson, who attends Raleigh Broughton High School, has been named a first team Polo Golf Junior All-American in each of the last three years. Simpson captured individual medalist honors at the 2002 Scott Robertson Memorial as well as the 2001 Rolex Tournament of Champions. He was also a member of the East Canon Cup team in 2002 and '03.

The Deacs will graduate just one senior, Bill Haas, off the 2003-04 squad and will return a solid nucleus of underclassmen next season. The incoming trio will join current junior Doug Manchester, sophomores Barr Blanton, Kyle Reifers and Alex Yates, and this year's freshman class of Matt McLean, Sean Moore and Chad Wilcox.
