The Wake Forest women's basketball team opens up the 2003-04 season Friday night at Loyola College. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Reitz Arena in Baltimore, Md.
The Demon Deacons head into the matchup with the Greyhounds after splitting their two exhibition games. Wake Forest routed WBC Ilirija, 74-49, but lost to Premier Players, 81-72. In the loss against Premier, Wake Forest found themselves down 19 points at halftime and cut the deficit to only five points at one stage in the second half, but was unable to overcome the poor start. Premier Players faced five ACC opponents (Clemson, Georgia Tech, NC State, Virginia and Wake Forest) during its 12 game tour and went 4-1, posting wins over the Lady Tigers, Yellow Jackets and Cavaliers.
Senior Tonia Brown paced the Deacs in their two preseason outings. The guard averaged 16.0 points and 7.5 rebounds in the two games. Brown shot 50% (11-for-22) from the floor and 80% (8-of-10) from the free throw line. Junior Erin Ferrell scored 14.5 ppg and corralled 9.5 rpg. Sophomore Liz Strunk was the final Wake Forest player to average double figures. Strunk scored 10.0 ppg, grabbed 5.5 rpg and dished out 3.0 apg.
