Amherst, MA - The #1 Wake Forest field hockey team defeated the Michigan Wolverines, 1-0, in NCAA Semifinals action on Friday. The Deacs advance to the National Championship game on Sunday, where they will face the winner of the Duke/Maryland semifinal game. Action is set to begin at Garber Field on the campus of The University of Massachusetts, at 12:35 p.m. The game will be televised live on CSTV, and Direct TV Channel 610.
Despite intense first half Demon Deacon offensive pressure, and a five minute one-woman advantage after a yellow card on Michigan's Jessica Blake, Wake Forest was unable to score in the first 35 minutes. Michigan, with only one shot, suffered similar scoring difficulties.
The first and only points of the game went to the Demon Deacons on the fourth consecutive penalty corner of the second half. Junior Claire Laubach pushed the ball in to Maeke Boreel, who chipped it to Kelly Doton. Kelly passed to Laubach who connected with the net for her eighth goal of the season. Doton received credit for her seventeenth assist of the year.
Wake Forest returns to the Championship game for the second year in a row, having won the NCAA Tournament in 2002.
