Wake Forest Postgame Quotes November 22, 2003 / vs. Elon

Wake Forest head coach Skip Prosser
"We guarded well tonight. We were thinking going into the game that Coach Nestor does a good job running his team. We wanted to take away back cuts and deny the ball. We didn't realize Vytas was not going to play until this morning, and so we had to go with a smaller lineup. That's reflected in Elon's 16 offensive rebounds. We were not as efficient in our offense as we would have liked to be, but I'm happy with the way we played."

On Eric Williams:
"For us to be good, Eric Williams has to be good. He'll make mistakes but we just have to keep working. We want to rush down the court and have a layup as our first option, with Eric being our second and the jump shot as our third. Eric can run down the court well. He's not a woolly mammoth; he can run.

On Chris Paul:
"I would much rather have a player that can make plays and really wants to rather than a wallflower that you have to energize. I'm really pleased with his progress so far. I prefer to have a player like Chris that you have to throttle down rather than throttle up."

On the team:
"Today we had two juniors and bunch of sophomores and freshmen playing. It's not going to be a beautiful painting every time. Sometimes it's going to be a Picasso, all jumbled up. We just have to keep playing hard."

Wake Forest center Eric Williams
"We just had to try to get ready defensively. Deny, deny, deny - that was our goal. Coach Prosser said we did a good job but we have to get better. The intensity picked up with every denial and turnover. That will be a focal point for us all season."

"We played well today, but we still made our mistakes. The team is counting on me to score and it has become a mentality for me. Soon it will just be second nature."

Wake Forest point guard Chris Paul
On his first home game:
"It's definitely exciting. The crowd was wild and coach had us ready to play. We went 16-0 at home last year and I just want to keep that tradition going."

"My teammates are such great shooters. When I see Justin's guy leave him to cover me, I would just pass it off. I know how to score; I was a scorer in high school. But I like to look for my teammates also."

Elon Head Coach Ernie Nestor
"Our guys practiced all week in hopes of competing but our kids were not given the opportunity. It was not the difference in the game but it was very disheartening. We are attempting to become a better basketball team."

"We did do some good things tonight but we are still a work in progress. Those three guys (officials) will not prevent us from getting where we want to be. We are still at the point where people are allowed to kick us around. It will stay that way until we stand up and do something about it."
