WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.-- Wake Forest sophomores Valerie Rydberg and Christy Williams were named to the 2003 American Volleyball Collegiate Association East Region team for their outstanding seasons on the volleyball court for the Demon Deacons in 2003. Wake Forest finished the season with a 21-10 overall record and 10-6 conference mark, good for third place in the ACC.
Rydberg, a redshirt sophomore from Lemont, Illinois, led the Deacs with 429 kills on the season and her 4.17 kills per game was good for fourth in the ACC. Rydberg also ranked fifth in the league with 3.61 digs per game and was the only player in the ACC who ranked in the top five in both kills per game and digs per game. Her 0.71 service aces per game led the ACC and ranked sixth in the nation. Rydberg was one of just two players in the league to be named ACC Player of the Week twice during the season and received first team All-ACC honors.
Williams, a sophomore from Chicago, Illinois, followed up on her ACC Freshman of the Year campaign in 2002 by ranking third in the ACC with a .362 hitting percentage and earning second team All-ACC honors in 2003. Williams finished the season with 293 kills and led the Demon Deacons with 96 total blocks. Williams and Rydberg are just the third and fourth Wake Forest players ever to receive AVCA All-Region honors.
