Dec. 5, 2003

Jennifer Averill, who guided Wake Forest to a second straight NCAA field hockey national championship, was named Regional Coach of the Year by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association.

In 2003, Averill led the Demon Deacons to a 22-1 record, an ACC regular season title, the ACC Tournament crown, a fourth consecutive Final Four and the NCAA championship. She was previously named ACC Coach of the Year.

Wake Forest's NCAA championships in 2002 and 2003 are the first and second national titles recorded by a Deacon women's team. The championships are the first national back-to-back titles by a Wake Forest team since the men's golf team won crowns in 1974 and 1975.

The Dita/NFHCA National Coach of the Year will be announced Jan. 10.
