Men's Golf Opens Spring Season At Arizona Intercollegiate

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest men??s golf team opens the 2003 spring season on February 3-4 at the PING-Arizona Intercollegiate. The 54-hole tournament takes place at Arizona National Country Club in Sabino Springs on a par 71, 6,776-yard layout.
Play begins on Monday morning with 36 holes. The final 18 will be contested on Tuesday.
The highly competitive 16-team field includes 13 schools who competed in either the 2002 NCAA Regionals or Championship. Five teams, including Wake Forest, are currently ranked among the top 25 in the current GolfWeek/Sagarin ratings. Participating teams include host Arizona, Arizona JV, Arizona State, California, Cal-Irvine, Fresno State, Houston, Long Beach State, New Mexico, Oregon, Pepperdine, Texas-El Paso, Tulsa, UCLA, USC and Wake Forest.
The Demon Deacons enter the spring campaign ranked third nationally in the GolfWeek/Sagarin ratings and are the highest-ranked squad competing in the PING-Arizona Intercollegiate. Individually, Wake Forest is led by junior Bill Haas and senior Brent Wanner. Haas is seventh in the national individual ratings, while Wanner checks in at No. 30. Others competing for WFU in Arizona include seniors Cortland Lowe and Chris Yoder and freshman Kyle Reifers.
The PING-Arizona Intercollegiate marks the start of a busy spring season for WFU. The Deacs compete three straight weekends in February, next heading to New Orleans for the Tulane Invitational (Feb. 11-12) and following that up with a trip to Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. for the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate at Sawgrass Country Club (Feb. 17-18).
