The Wake Forest volleyball team held its end of the year banquet last weekend, handed out its team awards and recognized the accomplishments of the 2002 season as well as the progress made during the 2003 spring season.
With sophomore team manager Paul Mayer serving as the emcee, head coach Valorie Baker applauded her staff, introduced new assistant coach Melissa Batie, recognized the team's two seniors and thanked all the players and their families.
Senior setter Ashlee Phillips was named the team's most valuable player. Junior middle blocker Jessica Hauff was picked the team's offensive MVP and redshirt freshman outside hitter Valerie Rydberg was honored as the team's defensive MVP. Freshman middle blocker Christy Williams, who was the ACC Rookie of the Year, was chosen the team's freshman of the year. Freshman libero A.J. Nicholas picked up the Demon Deacon Award for her hard work both on and off the court and sophomore middle blocker Morgan Havig took home the Dedication Award for her efforts in the weight room.
The Demon Deacons finished the 2002 season seventh in the ACC with a 6-10 mark in the league and an overall record of 14-18. Wake Forest returns five starters next season.
