RALEIGH, N.C. - The 25th-ranked Wake Forest men's tennis team earned a 4-0 victory over the five seed, No. 37 Virginia Friday morning in the quarterfinals of the ACC Championship at Millbrook Exchange Tennis Center. The Demon Deacons, 13-7 overall now, advance to the semifinals where they will meet top-seeded and ninth-ranked Duke at 10:00 a.m. tomorrow.
"It was a tough doubles point and that gave us good momentum," said Wake Forest head coach Jeff Zinn. "Our seniors, Mike Murray, David Bere and Trent Brendon are so important to us in postseason play. We wanted to jump on them early and we didn't want them to breath."
Mike Murray and Trent Brendon defeated Virginia's Rylan Rizza and Nick Meythaler 8-4 at No. 2 doubles and then Derrick Spice and Brett Ross fell 6-8 at No. 1 doubles. With the doubles point on the line, Wake Forest's David Loewenthal and Andrew Simpson won 8-6 over Chris Conyer and Stephen Nolen at No. 3, securing the 1-0 lead for the Demon Deacons.
Murray gave Wake Forest a 2-0 lead with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Cohen at No. 5 singles and then David Bere shut down Virginia's Michael Duquette 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3 singles for a 3-0 lead. Derrick Spice slammed the door on the Cavaliers with match-deciding 6-4, 6-2 win over Rylan Rizza at No. 2 singles.
