Winston-Salem, N.C. -- The Wake Forest baseball team snapped a two-game losing streak with a 14-2 victory over visiting High Point on Wednesday afternoon at Hooks Stadium. The Deacons laced 13 hits in the win, led by a 3-for-4, 3 RBI performance by Winston-Salem native Steve LeFaivre.
Freshman right-hander Kyle Young pitched five effective innings for the Deacons to run his season record to 5-0. Young allowed just two runs on four hits with four strikeouts. Daniel Davidson and Eric Maycroft combined to throw four scoreless innings of relief.
Maycroft, a senior from Algonquin, Ill., did not allow a hit in his two innings and struck out one batter.
High Point scored in the top of the first inning but Wake Forest came back with a pair of runs in their first at-bat to take a 2-1 lead. Ryan Johnson's RBI single scored Adam Bourassa to tie the game and Ryan Hubbard scored on a passed ball.
Wale Forest scored four runs in the third inning, all with two outs, to extend the lead to 6-1. With two outs and nobody on, Jeff Ruziecki doubled to the wall in left-center field. LeFaivre followed with an RBI single and advanced to second on the throw to the plate. After Chris Getz walked, Ben Ingold singled to score LeFaivre. Ryder Then, Ryder Mathias lined a two-run single into left field.
The Deacons continued to pour it on with a pair of runs in the fourth inning on another RBI single from LeFaivre. The seventh Wake Forest run scored on a wild pitch, one of five wild pitches on the day by High Point pitchers who also walked 13 Deacon batters.
In three games against High Point this year, Wake Forest drew 35 walks.
The Deacons scored two more in the fifth and tacked on four more in the sixth inning for the game's final margin.
Bourassa, Johnson and Mathias each had two hits for the Deacons. Panther shortstop Colin Cronin accounted for two of High Point's five hits.
Toby Hoskins was charged with the loss for High Point, falling to 1-6 on the season. He lasted 3 2/3 innings, allowed eight runs on seven hits with seven walks and no strikeouts.
The Deacons host Clemson for three games beginning on Thursday at Hooks Stadium. Wake Forest will send Golden Spikes Award Finalist Kyle Sleeth to the mound in game one of the series. Clemson's starter has not been announced. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m.
