Wake Forest women's golfer Nuria Clau and men's golfer Brent Wanner were picked to the 2003 Verizon Academic All-District III University Division At-Large Teams by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on May 22.
Clau, a senior from Barcelona, Spain, earned first team honors for the women's at-large group, while Wanner, a senior from Chatham, Mass., was named to the second team for the men's at-large group.
To qualify for the Verizon Academic All-District program, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore in class, a starter or a significant reserve on their team and have compiled a minimum 3.20 cumulative GPA. The District III teams include student-athletes from Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida.
As one of the 10 student-athletes selected for the all-District III first team, Clau will be placed on the Verizon Academic All-America ballot. Results of the voting for the national women's at-large squad will be announced June 12.
The ACC Women's Golfer of the Year, Clau won two tournaments, finished second at the ACC Championships and broke the school record with a 72.38 stroke average this season. Leading Wake Forest to a runner-up finish at the ACC Championships, Clau and the Demon Deacons just missed the cut at the NCAA Regional Championship and came in 10th. She is currently ranked 12th in the Golfweek/Sagarin ratings. Clau was an All-America pick by the National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) in 2002 and tied for second at the ACC Championships. A member of the Spanish National Team since 1997, Clau was the 1998 Spanish Amateur Champion and is a former member of Spain's World Cup Team. A two-time All-ACC selection, Clau graduated earlier this month with a degree in Mathematical Business. Named the 2002 Wake Forest Female Scholar Athlete of the Year, Clau is a two-time NGCA Academic All-American.
Leading the Demon Deacon men's team at the NCAA Championships with a five-over-par score of 221 going into the last day, Wanner is second on the squad and ninth in the ACC with a 71.73 stroke average. He has a team best 11 top-20 finishes and won the Schenkel E-Z-Go Inviational in March. Ranked 26th in the Golfweek/Sagarin individual rankings, Wanner was named the Golfweek Player of the Week on April 4. A four-time All-ACC selection, Wanner is just the fourth Demon Deacon and ninth player in ACC history to sweep all-conference honors all four years of school. A Mathematical Business major, Wanner graduated earlier this month. He is one of five finalists for the 2003 Bryan Nelson Award, which honors athletics, academics and citizenship.
