WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- In front of nearly 2,000 fans and students at Spry Stadium, the fourth-ranked Wake Forest men's soccer team captured a 2-1 exhibition victory over 20th-ranked Coastal Carolina. The Demon Deacons scored twice in the game's final 10 minutes for the win.
Coastal Carolina scored in the 30th minute on a rebound effort. Deacon junior Tomy Szczypiorski had a chance to equalize in the 36th minute but his header was cleared off the line by a Coastal defender. Despite outshooting the Chanticleers 7-4 in the first half, Wake Forest found itself trailing 1-0 at the intermission.
In the second half, however, the Deacons maintained possession for nearly the entire half. Wake Forest did not allow a second half shot and did not give up a single corner kick throughout the entire 90 minutes. Meanwhile, with Wake Forest stringing together numerous scoring opportunities, Ryan Alexander finally broke for the Deacons through in the 81st minute. His goal was assisted by Jeremiah White and James Riley, tying the game at one.
Six minutes later, Justin Moose found White who buried the game winner at the 86:26 mark.
The Deacons outshot Coastal Carolina 15-4 and earned six corner kicks to none.
Wake Forest begins its regular season next weekend at home with the Wake Forest adidas Invitational. All four teams in the field are ranked including fourth-ranked Wake Forest, fifth-ranked St. John's, 10th-ranked Connecticut and 19th-ranked North Carolina. The Demon Deacons will play Connecticut on Friday night. On Saturday, Wake Forest plays the Red Storm. All contests involving Wake Forest will begin at 7:00 p.m. at Spry Stadium.
