Volleyball Sweeps Kentucky In Season Opener

WINSTON-SALEM, NC-- The Wake Forest volleyball team started the 2003 season strong with a three-game sweep of the Kentucky Wildcats on Friday evening at Reynolds Gymnasium. Sophomore Valerie Rydberg led the way for Wake Forest, recording 14 kills and seven digs. Match one of the tournament saw SMU defeat Tennessee Tech three games to one in the season opener for both teams.
The Demon Deacons doubled up Kentucky in game one by a score of 30-15. Defending ACC Rookie of the Year Christy Williams came through with some big kills early and the Deacs never looked back.
Game two was a back and forth battle which Wake Forest was able to win by a score of 30-27 thanks to a team attack percentage of .364.
The Deacs cruised to victory in game three by a score of 30-18. The highlight of this game was four consecutive service aces by freshman Lauren Peterson.
Over the course of the match, the Deacs hit an outstanding 45.3 percent as a number of different players had strong performances. Sophomore setter Erin Borhart recorded 34 assists to go along with seven kills. Peterson also had eight kills to go along with five service aces, and freshman Natasha Schaefer shined in her collegiate debut, recording eight digs and three assists.
The Deacon Invitational will conclude on Saturday. Kentucky takes on SMU at 11 a.m. in match three of the tournament. Wake Forest hosts Tennessee Tech at 1 p.m., and the Golden Eagles come right back to play Kentucky at 5 p.m. The final match of the weekend will pit The Demon Deacons against SMU tomorrow at 7 p.m.
