Storrs, Conn. - The Wake Forest women's soccer team played step-for-step with #6 Notre Dame, but the Fighting Irish used a pair of second-half goals to pull away for a 3-0 victory over the Demon Deacons in women's college soccer action from the UConn adidas Soccer Classic Sunday afternoon.
Wake Forest (0-1-1) appeared as though they would enter halftime scoreless, but Jill Krivacek gave Notre Dame a 1-0 lead with just 26-seconds remaining in the first-half. Despite the deflating end to the opening stanza, the Demon Deacons were in a good position heading into the second 45-minutes.
Notre Dame (2-0-0), which routed Hartford 9-1 in their season opener Friday night, would put the game out of reach with a pair of goals in the game's final 25-minutes. Mary Boland extended the lead to 2-0 with a goal at the 64:13 mark. Boland buried the rebound attempt after Wake Forest goalkeeper Kenna Healy stopped Amanda Guertin's initial shot.
Amy Warner put the final touch on the victory for the Fighting Irish with an unassisted goal just 10-seconds from the final whistle.
Healy, who registered a shutout in the Demon Deacons opening game of the season, did allow three goals, but still managed to record seven saves in defeat. Erika Bohn made five saves for Notre Dame in the shutout effort.
The Deacons return to action on Thursday, September 4 with the home opener against Liberty. Kickoff is scheduled for Spry Stadium at 7 p.m. Wake Forest has captured both meetings all-time with the Flames by an aggregate score of 12-1. The Deacons blanked Liberty, 6-0, in their last meeting on October 30, 2001.
