Winston-Salem, N.C. - Sarah Kozey scored one goal and assisted on the other to lead Wake Forest past Washington State, 2-1, in women's college soccer action from the Wake Forest adidas Women's Soccer Classic Friday night.
Kozey gave the Demon Deacons the lead at 25:33 of the first-half. The sophomore chased down Kaitlyn Doe's centering pass and ripped a shot that glanced off the post. Kozey regained the ricochet off the post and slipped it past the Cougar goalkeeper.
Neither team would create much of an attack until Rachel Rodrick brought Washington State even at 54:20 of the second-half. Rodrick beat a pair of Demon Deacon defenders on the right wing, cut across the top of the box and blistered a shot into the left-upper corner - past a sprawling Kenna Healy. The goal was the first that Wake Forest had surrendered in 234:20.
After the tying goal from Rodrick, the Deacs really picked up the pressure. Kozey and Doe each had golden opportunities to give Wake Forest the lead, but both chances slid wide of the goal.
The increased pressure did result in a goal. A.B. Robbins picked up her first goal of the season at 62:45 to give the Deacs a 2-1 lead. Kozey whipped in a beautiful cross from the left wing and Doe one-touched it back across the box to a wide open Robbins. The senior forward calmly slotted it past the Washington State netminder.
Healy and the rest of the Wake Forest defense would hold off a couple of solid Cougar scoring chances in the waning minutes to pick up the victory.
Healy made a save in each half, while her counterpart Katie Hultin registered three saves - all after halftime.
The Demon Deacons return to action Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. against Oregon State. The Beavers lost its earlier match with Duke, 2-1, on an own goal with 13-seconds left in regulation. The Cougars will face the Blue Devils at 11:30 on Sunday.
