WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.-- The Wake Forest volleyball team hosts the Black & Gold Challenge this weekend in Winston-Salem. The Demon Deacons will face 19th ranked Louisville on Friday at 7 pm. The Deacs will then take on Campbell at 1 pm on Saturday and Radford at 7 pm on Saturday. The Demon Deacons and Cardinals have never faced each other. Wake Forest is 4-0 all-time against Campbell and 7-3 against Radford.
The Deacs went 3-0 to win the Georgetown Classic held in Washington D.C. last weekend. Wake Forest defeated Coppin State, William & Mary, and host Georgetown without dropping a single game all weekend.
At 7-1, Wake Forest is off to its best start since the 2000 season when the Deacs opened up the year with a 10-1 mark. In their victories, the Demon Deacons have dropped just one game. Each win has been a 3-0 sweep except for a 3-1 victory over SMU in the Deacon Invitational.
Sophomore Christy Williams was named MVP of the Georgetown Classic after posting 31 kills and 13 service aces for the Deacs in their three matches. Williams is tied for second in the ACC with a .417 attack percentage and her 13 aces put her in fifth place in the league.
Redshirt sophomore Valerie Rydberg was named to her third consecutive All-Tournament Team at the Georgetown Classic after racking up 28 kills and 28 digs in the Deacs' three victories in Washington D.C. Rydberg leads the team in kills, service aces and is tied with freshman Natasha Schaefer for the team lead in digs.
Sophomore setter Erin Borhart was also named to the Georgetown Classic All-Tournament Team as she led all players with 116 assists. Borhart ranks second in the ACC with an average of 12.40 assists per game.
Wake Forest Head Coach Valorie Baker needs just three wins to move ahead of Mary Buczek into third place on Wake Forest's career victories list. Baker has recorded 62 victories in just over three seasons with the Deacs.
