WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.-- Sophomore Valerie Rydberg was named ACC Player of the Week for her accomplishment last weekend in leading Wake Forest to three straight victories at the Deacon Invitational. The Lemont, Illinois native recorded consecutive double-doubles against Tennessee Tech and SMU in the Deacs' two matches on Saturday and was named MVP of the Deacon Invitational for her efforts.
Overall in the three match sweep, Rydberg hit .387 with 41 kills, 35 digs, eight service aces and five assists. She put together a remarkable performance in the Deac's season opener on Friday night against Kentucky, connecting on 14 of 21 kill opportunities while committing only two errors, a .571 hitting percentage.
Rydberg is the first Demon Deacon to be named ACC Player of the Week since Ashlee Phillips received the honor in October of 2001. Wake Forest returns to action this weekend when they travel to Champaign, Illinois for the Illini Classic. The Deacs take on Evansville on Friday at 6 p.m. and then face either Illinois or DePaul Saturday evening.
