Winston-Salem, N.C. - The top-ranked Wake Forest field hockey team defeated seventh-ranked Michigan State by a score of 5-0 on Sunday. The win extends the team's winning streak to 26 and also marked the Demon Deacons' seventh consecutive shutout at Kentner Stadium.
The Deacons (7-0) struck early when junior All-American Kelly Dostal scored on a penalty corner 7:39 into the action. Dostal's goal came off a Maeke Boreel pass and was her sixth score on the year.
The Deacs extended the lead to 2-0 less than six minutes later, when Dostal tallied her second goal of the afternoon when she rebounded her own miss and shot a laser from 10 yards out that hit the top left corner of the net.
Three and a half minutes later, Wake Forest added another goal this time on a penalty corner where senior Kelly Doton fed sophomore Ariel Meyers for her second goal of the season. Senior Katie Ridd kept the score at 3-0 when she made a sensational diving stop with 18 minutes left in the half.
The Deacons continued the offense quickly after halftime as it took freshman Lauren Crandall just 1:56 to find the net for her first goal of the day and fourth of the weekend. She rebounded her own miss and fired a shot in the back of the net for her fourth goal on the year.
The Deacons topped off the scoring when Boreel found Dostal again 53 minutes into the game on a penalty corner for Dostal's third goal of the day and team-leading eighth on the year.
Ridd recorded her fifth shutout on the year and third in a row, and it also marked the 23rd for her career.
"This was an outstanding game," head coach Jennifer Averill said, "and I am so proud of the girls. It was extremely hot yesterday [vs. VCU] and to come back and play a top caliber team in Michigan State was great. We set the precedence early in the game and took control. We played aggressively in both halves today."
The Deacons host second-ranked North Carolina Friday at 4 pm in Kentner Stadium on the Wake Forest campus.
