College Park, Md. - The 10th-ranked Wake Forest men's soccer team fell to top-ranked Maryland 1-0 on Saturday night in College Park. The Deacons put seven shots on goal but couldn't put any in the net as Wake Forest was shutout for the second straight match.
Wake Forest had not been shut out in back-to-back games since the 2001 postseason.
The game marked the early return of senior All-American forward Jeremiah White who entered as a substitute in the 66th minute. The Deacons were out-shot 11-9 for the game but after White came on, the Deacons fired three shots to Maryland's one.
Two weeks ago at Virginia, White suffered a fractured cheekbone. He was expected to miss anywhere up to eight weeks. Last Wednesday, he underwent successful surgery to repair the bone. White was medically cleared to play this week by doctors at the Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. He participated in Saturday's contest with a large protective face mask.
The Terrapins scored the game's only goal in the first half at the 28:27 mark by Sumed Ibrahim. Maryland's Ian Rodway slid a pass into the attacking third and Sumed out-ran the Deacon defense and fired a shot past goalkeeper William Hesmer.
The Deacons and Terrapins each had good chances in the second half. Wake Forest's best opportunity came with 10 minutes to play. Freshman Wells Thompson and junior Tomy Szczypiorski fired shots in rapid succession from inside the penalty area but Maryland goalkeeper Noah Palmer made the necessary saves.
Hesmer, a preseason first team All-American, made three saves for Wake Forest including a pair of the spectacular variety, allowing Wake Forest to stay within striking distance.
"I'm proud of our performance. We played pretty well," 10th year head coach Jay Vidovich said. "The scoreboard doesn't show it but we had some quality chances and I thought the end result could have easily been different. We had a lot of guys step up their play tonight, particularly the young guys. All in all, it was a pretty good effort and good performance, if not a good result."
Maryland picked up its seventh shutout in nine games. The Terps have allowed just two goals all season.
The Deacons slide to 4-3 on the season, 0-2 in the ACC. Maryland improves to 9-0 overall, 2-0 in the conference.
After playing just one home game in the month of September, Wake Forest returns home to play seven of its next nine games at Spry Stadium where the Deacons have not lost a regular season game in more than two years.
The first of those home games is next Saturday against NC State. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
