The Wake Forest volleyball team travels to Champaign, Illinois this weekend to compete in the Illini Classic. The Demon Deacons will face Evansville on Friday at 6 p.m. and then take on either DePaul or Illinois on Saturday evening
The Deacs opened up the 2003 season with authority last weekend in Winston-Salem. Wake Forest went 3-0 to win the Deacon Invitational. The Demon Deacons opened up the weekend with a 3-0 sweep over the Kentucky Wildcats before sweeping Tennessee Tech 3-0 on Saturday afternoon. The Deacs finished off their perfect weekend with a 3-1 victory over SMU on Saturday evening in Reynolds Gymnasium.
Redshirt sophomore Valerie Rydberg had a phenomenal weekend for the Deacs and was named MVP of the Deacon Invitational. Rydberg notched 41 kills in ten games played and recorded 35 digs to go along with eight service aces. The Lemont, Illinois native was also named ACC Player of the Week for her efforts in leading the Deacs to a 3-0 start in 2003.
Wake Forest's three freshmen made an immediate impact in their collegiate debut last weekend. Outside hitter Lauren Peterson played in all three matches and 16 kills and 11 digs. Peterson also had six service aces, five of which came on consecutive points against Kentucky in the Deac's season opener. Natasha Schaefer played the libero position and came up with a team-leading 36 digs in the three matches. Schaefer was rewarded by being named to the Deacon Invational All-Tournament Team. Freshman Jenna Doane also saw some action against Tennessee Tech and recorded two kills on two attempts.
Demon Deacon seniors Ashley Fisher, Jessica Hauff and Sara Beth DeLisle combined for 38 kills and 36 digs last weekend at the Deacon Invitational.
Sophomores Erin Borhart and Christy Williams both had terrific weekends for the Demon Deacons. Williams, last season's ACC Rookie of the Year, hit .457 and was second on the team with 24 kills. Borhart has taken over setter duties from Wake Forest's all-time assist leader, Ashlee Phillips. In her first three matches as a starter, Borhart recorded a team-leading 122 assists, 25 digs and 22 kills.
