WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Senior Kim Stern put up a match-high 14 kills and three solo blocks, en route to leading the Wake Forest volleyball team to a 3-0 (30-28, 30-23, 30-24) sweep of NC State, Friday night at Reynolds Gym. The sweep for the Deacs marks the first three game win in 16 outings and improves their record to 10-12 overall and 2-9 in the conference, while NC State falls to 10-15 overall and 0-11 in the ACC.
The two teams opened the first game, keeping things close, tying the score eight times until the Pack broke away with a 4-1 run ending at 16-19. Fighting back with four straight points, the Deacs tied the game at 23 all. A block and a kill by Stern kept the game close as the teams continued to tie the game three more times. At 26 all, a kill by Valerie Rydberg and another by Michael Faulkner helped Wake gain a small lead at 28-26. Playing once for game point, another kill by Rydberg ended the first, 30-28.
In the second game, the Deacs dominated the Pack, taking them on a 11-4 run from the start, that was highlighted by a pair of kills for both Christy Williams and Stern. With Williams at the line at 16-9, another kill from Stern and an ace increased the Deacs lead to 10, a deficit that NC State was unable to overcome. Despite a short 4-0 run by the Pack at 22-16, the Deacs eventually took the second game 30-23.
The third game was much like the second with Wake Forest jumping out to a large 9-4 lead. Continuing to fight, the Pack went on a 6-1 run at 13-6, but Wake answered it with a 7-2 run of their own. Holding onto the lead, a pair of kills by Stern ended the match, giving the Deacs the victory.
As a team, the Deacs out-hit the Pack .242 to .181 with 55 total kills. Defensively, both teams put up seven team blocks, but the Deacs had 46 digs to NC State's 32. Junior Erin Borhart put up a match-high 40 assists, while freshman Michael Faulkner had 11 kills. _ The Deacs will return to the court tomorrow night as they host North Carolina in Reynolds Gym. Match time is set for 6 p.m.
