WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest freshman Brett Linnenkohl smacked a two-run triple and senior Ryder Mathias added an RBI single to help the Black pick up their first victory in the Black & Gold World Series with a 5-3 triumph over the Gold at Hooks Stadium Thursday.
Linnenkohl went 1-for-2, while freshman Andy Goff, senior Ben Ingold, Mathias, freshman Andrew Wall and senior Justin Keadle all scored runs. The Black was aggressive on the base paths with five stolen bases. Ingold swiped a pair of bags.
Freshman Brian Murphy started for the Black and pitched effectively over the first three innings to register the win. The right-hander was charged with three runs, but only one was earned. Murphy yielded just one hit and struckout one, but walked three.
Senior Danny Mackey started for the Gold and allowed five runs, four earned, in three innings. Mackey gave up just three hits, but was victimized by four hits.
Sophomore Brian Shust picked up the only hit for the Gold. Shust went 1-for-1 with an RBI, while senior J.B. Tucker picked up a sacrifice fly.
The Gold did mount a rally in the top of the fourth inning with three runs, but the game was called midway into the fourth inning. Thus, the result was reverted to the score after three innings which gave the Black the victory.
The Black looks to even up the series this afternoon when Sophomore Sean Souders takes the mound. The Gold will send freshman Drew O'Neil to the hill. First-pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
