KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The Wake Forest women's soccer team closed the 2004 season with a 2-0 loss to UAB in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, Friday night at the University of Tennessee. The Demon Deacons outshot the Blazers 26-8 with junior Sarah Kozey taking a game-high 10 shots, tying her for the school record for the most shots taken in a single game.
The Blazers started things off quickly with Briana McCarty putting the ball in the cage for UAB just four minutes into the first half. After the goal, the Deacs were able to bring the ball into their opponents territory and sophomore Elizabeth Remy nailed two shots towards the goal, both which resulted in a save. Keisha Garrick was able to find another shot for the Deacs, but the Blazers were able to bring the ball back into Wake's defensive territory just minutes later. A shot from about 20 feet out by UAB's Liz Bosscher sailed over Heather Currie's head, putting the Blazers up, 2-0. Continuing to fight through the remainder of the first half, Wake did not allow the Blazers another chance at the cage. By the end of the stanza, the Deacs had outshot the Blazers 11-2.
Wake Forest opened up the second half with Kozey, Tara Caldwell and Jayme Liegh Cargnoni all taking shots on goal in the first three minutes. Holding onto possession of the ball for the majority of the half, the Deacs again out shot their opponents, 15-5, but were unable to connect.
The Demon Deacons close the season with a 10-7-2 overall record and a 4-4-1 mark in the ACC. The Deacons also earned their ninth straight at-large bid to the NCAA tournament.
