WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest is seeded #1 in the upcoming NCAA Men's Soccer Tournament and will receive a first-round bye. The pairings for the field of 48 were announced this afternoon by the NCAA. It is the fourth straight appearance, the ninth overall and second top-seed in the history of Demon Deacon soccer.
"This is a goal we set as a program before the start of every season and to meet that goal is satisfying," head coach Jay Vidovich said. "We're very excited to host. It means a lot to Wake Forest University and to our soccer program. It's nice to be home again where we've been successful this season."
Wake Forest (13-5-1) will play the winner of the first-round game between Florida International and Central Florida on Tuesday, November 23 at 7:00 p.m. at Spry Stadium.
The Demon Deacons have never met Central Florida in soccer. Wake Forest has already played FIU this season. The Demon Deacons knocked off the Golden Panthers, 3-2, in second day action from the Nike/Carolina Classic on Sept. 12. Wake Forest and FIU have split their two all-time meetings.
Five of the ACC's eight teams made the tournament field, including three that were the NCAA Tournament's top four seeds. In addition to the Demon Deacons being the top-seed, Maryland was seeded third and Virginia was seeded fourth. Of Wake Forest's 19 games this season, 13 were played against teams that were selected to the tournament. The Deacons posted a record of 7-5-1 against those teams which include North Carolina, South Carolina, Ohio State, Duke, Coastal Carolina, Loyola Marymount, VCU, UNCG, Virginia, Maryland and Penn State.
