Wake Forest turned in the lowest team score of the day and one of its best rounds of the fall season today at the Carpet Collegiate Golf Tournament in Rocky Face, GA, and the Demon Deacons are within striking distance of winning one of the college golf's top fall events.

With 18 holes to play at the 6,906-yard par 72 course, The Farm, the Demon Deacons own a 36-hole total of 593 (+17). Wake Forest trails third-ranked Georgia by eight strokes for the team lead and the Deacs lead ACC rival and No. 1-ranked Georgia Tech by two strokes. New Mexico, in fourth place at 597, is the only other team under 600 heading into Sunday's final round.

Wake Forest has finished in the top 10 in every fall tournament this year, but the Deacons are in their best position of the fall heading into the final 18 holes.

Coach Jerry Haas' team has put together a balanced effort the first two days of the tournament. Sophomore Sean Moore, playing his best since winning the ACC individual crown last spring, is tied for seventh place with a 3-over 147. Freshman Chris McCartin continues to enjoy a good fall. Today he shot a 1-under 71, jumping all the way from 37th to 11th place at 4-over 148.

Freshman Webb Simpson, Wake's top scorer this fall, rebounded from an opening-day 78 to fire a 1-over 73 today. He is tied for 29th place with a 7-over 151. Freshman Dustin Groves, who ballooned from a 73 to an 80 today, had the only disappointing round for the Deacons today. He is tied with junior teammate Kyle Reifers for 44th place at 9-over 153.

Vanderbilt's Luke List is 2-under 144 for the tournament to lead all individuals. He is one shot in front of Georgia's David Denham.

The Demon Deacons are playing in their final event of the semester.
