Deacons Finish Second At Carpet Collegiate

For the second straight day no team shot a lower score than Wake Forest and the Demon Deacons completed the Carpet Collegiate Tournament in Rocky Face (GA) in second place, just two strokes behind team champion and third-ranked Georgia.
Wake Forest, which shot an even par 288 today at the 6,906-yard par 72 course, The Farm, earned its highest finish of the fall season while competing against one of the strongest regular season fields of the year.
The 21st-ranked Demon Deacons shot a three-day score of 301-292-288--881. Georgia was just two strokes better, shooting a 290-297-292--879. Wake Forest finished two strokes ahead of third-place Georgia Tech, four strokes in front of fourth-place East Tennessee State and five shots better than fifth-place Clemson. The Deacons finished ahead of five other ACC teams.
The Deacons were led by sophomore Sean Moore, who shot a 1-under 71 today to finish second overall. Moore, the 2004 ACC individual champion, shot s 73-74-71--218 (+2) to finish just one stroke behind tournament medalist Rhys Davies of East Tennessee State. Moore's second-place finish was his second-highest career finish.
Junior Kyle Reifers shot a 2-under par 70 in the final round to jump from 44th to 19th place with a three-day 223 (+7). Freshman Webb Simpson finished tied for 22nd at 224 (+8). Freshmen Dustin Groves and Chris McCartin both shot 227 (+11) finished tied for 40th place.
Wake Forest finished in the top 10 in every fall tournament this year.
The Demon Deacons are off until the spring season, when they resume play Feb. 5-6 at the Florida Gator Invitational.
