WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest assistant coach and recruiting coordinator Bobby Muuss was recently honored by College Soccer News as one of the top assistant coaches in America. Muuss helped the Demon Deacons to a 14-5-2 record this past fall and the top-seed in the 2004 NCAA Tournament.
In his fourth season with the Demon Deacons, Muuss not only serves as the recruiting coordinator, but also works primarily with the goalkeepers. On the field, the Demon Deacons have reached heights unfamiliar with the program. Wake Forest has not only reached the NCAA Tournament each of the past four seasons, but the Deacs have entered two of those tournaments as the nation's top-seed and another as the third seed. In all, Wake Forest has captured a pair of ACC regular season championships and posted a record of 57-18-7 (.738) -- the most victories over any four-year span in school history.
Muuss was also instrumental in the success of former All-American netminder William Hesmer. Hesmer, the 17th overall selection in the 2003 MLS SuperDraft, was not only a three-time All-ACC selection, but was also a two-time NSCAA All-American. In fact, Hesmer was the Demon Deacons first ever first team NSCAA All-American. In 2004, Muuss worked with redshirt freshman goalkeeper Brian Edwards. Edwards finished the season with nine shutouts which tied the school record for most shutouts ever in a single-season.
Muuss has helped Wake Forest attract some of the top recruits in the entire country. Most recently, Soccer America rated the 2004 recruiting class as the second-best in the nation. College Soccer News ranked the Demon Deacon class as the 16th-best in 2001, 12th in 2002, 7th in 2003 and 6th in 2004.
With three more NSCAA All-Americans this season, the Demon Deacons have had nine NSCAA All-American selections in the past four years.
