WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's tennis team improved to 5-0 on the season with a 4-3 victory over 23rd-ranked Tennessee Saturday afternoon at the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center. The victory is the first over a top-25 foe since the Demon Deacons knocked off #9 Texas on May 16, 2002.
The Deacs took two of the three doubles matches to earn the first point. Junior Karin Coetzee and senior Liz Proctor defeated Melissa Schaub and Blakeley Griffith, 8-4, at No. 3. The Lady Vols responded with a victory at No. 2 doubles in a thrilling tie-breaker. Majen Immink and Breanna Kray held off junior Danielle Schwartz and senior Aimee Smith, 9-8 (5). Sophomore Katie Martzolf and freshman Ashlee Davis clinched the doubles point of the Deacs with an 8-6 victory over Ashley Robards and Sabita Maharaj at No. 1.
Riding that momentum, Wake Forest captured the first three singles matches to secure the upset. Proctor, Schwartz and Martzolf all swept their respective Tennessee foe in straight sets.
Proctor opened singles play with a 6-4, 6-1 rout of Kray at No. 6. Proctor is now 4-1 this spring and 12-4 including the fall. Schwartz followed up the impressive Proctor performance with one of her own. Schwartz disposed of Immink, 6-3, 7-6 (3) in straight sets. Schwartz also improved to 4-1 on the spring campaign.
#94 Martzolf then sealed the victory for the Deacs with a 7-6 (3), 6-3 straight set victory over #96 Robards. Martzolf improved to 4-1 in the spring and 10-4 overall.
With the match in hand, the Lady Vols did manage to capture the final three singles matches to narrow the final deficit to 4-3. #15 Coetzee lost in straight sets, 7-5, 7-6 (3) to #86 Maharaj at No. 1, while Davis (6-4, 6-3) and Smith (7-5, 6-2) also dropped their matches at No. 3 and No. 5, respectively, in straight sets.
The Lady Vols drop to 4-4 on the season, while Wake Forest now leads the all-time series, 12-11, and avenges last season's 5-0 defeat in Knoxville.
The Deacs return to action on Saturday, Feb. 21 against #24 Illinois. First-serve at the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center is set for noon.
