Winston-Salem, N.C. - The Wake Forest baseball team batted around three times and got a strong pitching performance from starter Kyle Young, resulting in a 23-7 drubbing of High Point on Monday afternoon at Hooks Stadium. The Deacons have won four in a row.
Young did not allow an earned run in seven innings of work, striking out eight Panthers with no walks. He faced the minimum through five innings, yielding just one infield hit. By game's end, he gave up just five hits and three unearned runs. Young picked up the win and dropped his season ERA to 0.82.
At the plate, the Demon Deacons (4-3) had several heroes including Matt Antonelli and Ben Ingold who each had four hits. Antonelli hit his first collegiate home run in the first inning. Casey Sterk was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI.
Winston-Salem senior Steve LeFaivre hit a towering pinch-hit grand slam in the seventh inning and followed that up with a three-run blast in the eighth inning. LeFaivre finished an amazing 2-for-2 with seven RBI.
Wake Forest batted around in the fourth, the sixth and seventh innings. Six Panther pitchers combined to walk 12 Deacon hitters and four defensive errors didn't help High Point's cause as they slipped to 3-8.
The Deacons posted season highs for runs (23), hits (17), extra base hits (6) and walks (12).
Several Wake Forest hitters extended their hitting streaks, including Ingold who has hit safely in every game this season.
The Deacons are on a four-game winning streak, their longest since last March. Wake Forest will host Charlotte tomorrow afternoon at Hooks Stadium. Tuesday's game will be a battle of left-handed starters as the Deacons send Tim Morley to the mound. Charlotte will start Zach Landphair.
The homestand continues on Wednesday against High Point, Thursday against Western Carolina and Saturday against Winthrop.
