This is the second in a series of reports from Athens, Greece from Wake Forest athletic trainer Adam Pecina. Pecina is working the Olympic Games for the United States' tennis teams.
The Action Begins
Today was the first day of competition for tennis. The team went undefeated, winning all four matches. We all left the tennis center with a smile. It was a nice way to cap off a long day. To pass time between matches, players gather around monitors in the locker room to check out some of the other sports. We receive a live feed, so we can keep track of any Olympic sport that is competing at that moment. A few of the guys witnessed Michael Phelps win his first gold medal of the 2004 Summer Games last night. I'm sure he will have a few more before the Games end. Unfortunately, we also witnessed the men's basketball team lose to Puerto Rico just a short while ago. Ouch! We all root for one another regardless, win or lose. It is not unusual to see one or two of the tennis men & women at other venues cheering others on a U.S. athlete from some other sport at one of our matches. There is a feeling of family among the U.S. team. This is one example of how the Olympic Games are special.
